Obamamania, Cookie Monster Edition

Seen at my local Safeway grocery store:

When was the last time you saw a president on a cookie at the grocery store? Is there some level of celebrity going on here, a la Princess Diana, that has not appeared in other elections? How might eating the image of the president be interpreted? It seems so bizarre!

Is it just me who looks at that and thinks, "Barack Obama, America's first green president." Maybe I need to adjust my monitor settings :)

In any case, it's a very odd concept. There's definitely a far higher level of celebrity than one usually finds around an inauguration -- this guy is definitively unique and new. Hey, I'm excited myself... but a cookie? Kinda ew.

The cult of personality makes me a bit nervous. And I'll bet you the cookies are neither moist nor delicious.

Pfeng: It's not your monitor. The actual color is a bit green.

VUBOQ: Sadly, I did not buy any, mostly because there are only 6 to a pack. These are at the Safeway on New Hampshire at the Beltway, but I found even more at the Fenton one.

Dykewife: I love you! You shame me for not thinking of that one in the first place.

GayProf: "Cult of personality" is actually a good way to put it. Princess Di didn't have any real power, but Obama will. Then I started thinking about other cults of personality. Did they have Mussolini cannolli?

These particular cookies seem to be wafers dipped in white chocolate and painted with edible, computer generated dye. I'm guessing that the dye adds a nasty chemical aftertaste to the cookies. The potential for tasteless (hee: tasteless!) jokes in this description never ends.

Yesterday, I was in the American History Museum. Their exhibit on the presidency did not mention any images of any presidents on any cookies, although you just KNOW that they have all sorts of presidential kitsch in storage.

AHA, so you *live* in DC. These cookies. I notice things like them everywhere. It is very South American somehow ... he is marketed kind of like a saint, or, people think they can make money off Obama products. The personality cult thing *is* kind of weird, I've been thinking for some time.
