Document of the Day: Mt. Hope Cemetery

On this day in 1860, Frederick Douglass purchased a plot in Mt. Hope Cemetery, in Rochester, New York.*:Douglass purchased this piece of land because his youngest daughter, Annie, had died the previous March at the age of ten. Douglass had been in England at the time, but his family was so distraught that he returned within the month despite the danger of being arrested. Annie, meanwhile, had been interred in the Porter family vault.

Douglass and the two Mrs. Douglasses are buried in this same spot.
